“Why can you build a website in minutes, but getting something live in your product takes weeks?”

When I teamed up with Jonathan to get Appcues off the ground nearly eight years ago, this was the simple question we both struggled to answer.

Fast forward to today and we are in the early stages of answering it. Over 1,500 customers rely on Appcues to build beautiful product experiences without writing any code. Together with these customers, we’ve powered over 1.8 billion end-user experiences to date.

Today, I’m thrilled to announce that we reached an important milestone to advance our mission of helping teams build products their users love. We closed a $32M Series B to support our growth!

This round is led by Marc Lederman at NewSpring Capital, with participation from Columbia Partners, existing investors Accomplice and Sierra Ventures, as well as several angels. I originally got to know the NewSpring team back in 2019 and their enthusiasm for Appcues grew when they saw the impact we were having within several of their portfolio companies. Our shared passion for this problem makes this a natural partnership.

What are we going to do with the cash, you ask? Three things:

Firstly, we’re going to invest in our team. Appcues was born in Boston and I get nostalgic thinking about the experiences we shared at our offices in Cambridge, Fenway, and the North End. But in June of 2020 we committed fully to remote work and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. We now have teammates in 22 states and 12 countries. I could not be more proud of the team that we’ve assembled and everything they have accomplished. I’m excited to see us grow, evolve, and take on new challenges.

Secondly, we’re making big investments in product. Appcues (and our whole product category for that matter) is still at our infancy in terms of our impact on how products are built. We believe that experience matters. We’re committed to Appcues being a native extension of our customers’ products, rather than some foreign guide living inside of it. Our promise to customers is clear: we will help you create beautiful experiences, move faster as a team, and become more product-led.

There’s so much more that we get to build; we’re excited to share it with you.

Thirdly, we’re going to invest in research and content to help teams build products their users love. Before Appcues really had a product, we started writing the User Onboarding Academy. Since then we’ve helped millions of readers better understand product-led growth, user onboarding, adoption, UX design, and product strategy. We’re going to double down here and share what we learn.

So that’s our strategy: 1. build an incredible team, 2. build an incredible product, 3. help our customers win. If you want to play a role in any of those, we’re hiring.

Finally, to everyone—our investors, teammates (current and former), friends, families, and customers—who played a role in getting us to this stage: thank you. You know who you are. The best journeys are seldomly straight lines. I feel privileged that I’ve been able to share this one with you.
